I am 33, yep, it’s out there for the whole internet world to see!!
Through various stages of my life I have struggled, to varying degrees, with spots. At the age of 16 my GP prescribed antibiotics to clear up persistent hormonal acne. With this treatment the pimples started clearing up and I was overjoyed. Sadly, you can only be on antibiotics for so long and shortly after ceasing the dose the dreaded blemishes returned.. My face wasn’t completely covered in spots.I guess you can say I have spent most my life being the combination skin type. The crusty spots around the mouth, bumpy forehead and bright red bulges on my nose caused major confidence blows all the same.
So back to the doctor I went and was prescribed the contraceptive pill, for the reason my doctor termed as ‘balancing my hormones’. So after a few brand changes we found one that worked. This time I was ecstatic, it was something that I could keep taking forever and for even months at a time as advised by my trusted doctor!
Then at 26 years of age something happened... I started getting really curious about health. You know, looking into where your food comes from, what side effects modern medicine has etc. During this journey I discovered that by taking the contraceptive pill I was in fact dosing myself up with synthetic hormones. I was astonished to learn that taking this tiny little pill everyday meant that my body was no longer expending energy making hormones it was already being fed ample levels of! (On a personal note I had always had trouble with my cycle and by this time it was almost non-existent.) So... my conscience and commitment to my health got the better of me and I went off the pill. You can just guess what I am about to say next, right? Yes, in time the pimples returned and during the dreaded PMS phases they were back with a vengeance!!
For a few years I looked at different ways to address this each with varying levels of success. It wasn’t until I started really looking into ingredients in my skin care products and in my food that my skin became more consistently clearer. I started studying with the School of holistic Cosmetology (now Formula Botanica) and learnt about the value of truly natural and organic skin care. This equipped me with the knowledge to start making my own products, which was a glorious journey (and also a major learning curve which I will share in future posts). Small spots still popped up from time to time, although much more sporadically than in the past. I was so excited to have something simple and effective.
In my quest to learn more and more about health I started seeing a naturopath. The results? Incredible! Through blood tests we discovered that I had a gene mutation. This mutation impacts my body in a variety of ways but the most important when it comes to skin is the ability to flush out toxins. Not being able to do this efficiently places strain on the liver and when the liver is overwhelmed with toxins it often looks to the skin (an excretory organ) to release the toxins. I also had an imbalance of hormones- both cortisol and testosterone (which impact the production of oils and acne in the skin). Slight diet adjustments (higher intake of nuts, legumes, leafy greens) and supplementation (namely Vitamin B, iron, zinc, magnesium) have resulted in the perfect support for the skin care routine I was following. I started to notice that my skin was consistently clear, not even one hormonal red dot during that time of the month. I feel so blessed to have been able to address my internal health issues naturally and holistically and in turn have them result in the positive side effect of clear skin (rather than the negative side effects that often result from taking prescription medicine). I am so ecstatic to report that for the past year I have had the clearest skin ever! I am delighted to share my learnings with you in this blog so that you too can support the health of your skin from a truly natural and holistic place.
Enjoy your journey of discovery...the destination is well worth it! x
