This photo was taken on my honeymoon at the incredibly peaceful getaway, El Silencio eco retreat in Costa Rica. This piece of paradise was well worth the intense journey to get here – the GPS took us the ‘fastest route’ through steep unpaved rocky roads that Toorak tractors can only dream of! Once we hit the most intense part of the road, which was akin to those shown in a Landrover TV advert torrential rain started to pour down and our little Daewoo 4wd (if you can call it that) started sliding backwards down the rocky incline. It was full on and my heart was jumping out of my chest… but we made it and what a treasure this place is!
The settings and vistas here are absolutely stunning – the lodges are situated in a deep valley surrounded by lush forest and mountains. The absolute definition of ‘serenity now’! Picture private green serene walking tracks leading to numerous waterfalls, vibrant humming bird gardens, blissful spa treatments and relaxing hot tubs – heaven!
The forest here is a mix of virgin and secondary growth due to the land being partially cleared in the past. The land was purchased and regenerated to its glorious state as you see today. It is common in Costa Rica for old agricultural land to be purchased by families or collectives, and regenerated into a national park to protect it from future clearing – an initiative that the government has welcomed and one that is making its positive mark on conservation.
Included in our stay was the opportunity to plant a tree. Not just any tree, one that is the main food source of the stunning native Resplendent Quetzal bird. The birds swallow the large avocados whole and are said to spread the seeds by regurgitating them thus growing more trees. To see these gorgeous colourful long tailed birds in action check out the Wildscreen archive feature. We always wanted to have a tree planting ceremony as part of our wedding celebration so this felt like an extraordinary way to fulfill this wish.
Here are just a few images from our time there:
